DIY: Three ingredient eye makeup remover

I’m a girl who loves to “play” in makeup and I definitely love big eyelashes. The spidery the lashes the better, but I hate waking up the next morning looking like an 80s rocker.

I’ve always used cold cream, jojoba oil, wipes, baby shampoo and commercial eye makeup removers. I began thinking what if I combined a couple of simple ingredients to create my own?

I got all Bill Nye Science Guy in the kitchen and came up with this simple three ingredient eye makeup remover using olive oil, water and baby shampoo.

Tip Tuesday: Copycat Starbucks Passion Tea

Who doesn’t love tea, right!? I’m a coffee drinker and a tea lover. When you think of a refreshing tea does the Starbucks Passion Lemonade tea come to mind? I scoured the Pinterest to find a recipe that I liked and that was simple.

Admittedly, I combined a couple to get this:

Starbucks Passion Lemonade Tea

Ingredients

2 Tazo Passion tea bags

8 oz of lemon juice

5 cups of cold water

Simple syrup

Simple Syrup

2 TBS water

4 TBS sugar

Mix in a saucepan and stir until sugar dissolves or place in microwave for 20 seconds, then stir until sugar dissolves.

Directions

  1. Steep tea in one cup of boiling water for five minutes. Set tea aside to cool for about 15 minutes.
  2. Pour tea and lemonade over ice.
  3. Stir in simple syrup to taste and serve immediately.

*Note: You’ll notice in my picture above I initially used vanilla extract in my first batch and it wound up tasting like cough syrup. I made a second cup without the extract and it was marvelous.

Lemons & Vanilla: Make Your Home Smell Good

There’s nothing like a sick baby to make you rethink clean. Baby girl came down with a cold and I wanted to make sure her things were clean and I figured disinfecting is the best way to ensure no one else in the house comes down with the same cold.

When you've got a sick baby it's important to clean the house to prevent the cold from spreading. https://thehousethatwalkerbuilt.wordpress.com/

Here’s a few things I did to clean, sanitize and get the house smelling good.

Sanitize

  • Wipe down not only the kitchen & bathroom counters, but light switches, door handles, fridge handles and toilet handles as well. I go between disinfectant wipes and a mixture of distilled white vinegar and water as well as alcohol because of the chemical-free properties. * Note: Don’t forget to wipe down the cell phones, remotes and computer keyboards.
  • Disinfect all teethers, pacifiers, bottles and nipples in really hot water.
  • Run hot water over toothbrush or soak in boiling water for a few minutes.
I use these Medela quick clean steam bags to disinfect pacificers, nipples and pump parts, but boiled water will work just fine. https://thehousethatwalkerbuilt.wordpress.com/

Toss

  • Any tissues or soiled diapers from trash cans. Clean trash cans.
  • Linens, clothes, bath & hand towels and even the bathroom rug into the laundry to be washed and replaced.

Smell Good

Now onto making the house smell good. I admit I was just going to spray some rose water and call it a day, but I decided to consult my favorite website, Pinterest. I even typed in the words make your house smell good and oh the wonderful treasures I found. So this recipe belongs to blogger Morgan Moore at One More Moore. She used fresh ingredients — rosemary, lemon and vanilla and I used what I had on hand because she is NOT buying fresh rosemary when we have dried.

I used obviously fresh lemon and DIY pure vanilla extract, thanks to my bestie who made it for me, but you can use imitation.

Ingredients

3 sprigs of rosemary (equivalent to 2 TBS of fresh chopped or 2 tsp of dried)

1 lemon, sliced

1 tsp of vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Boil rosemary, sliced lemon, vanilla in 1 1/2 cups of water in a saucepan.
  2. Boil all day, add water as necessary.

I Stole My Baby’s Aquaphor

I have a confession to make… I stole my baby’s Aquaphor. I know it’s wrong, but there’s just so many good uses. We received lots of Aquaphor when our little one was born and don’t get me wrong, I still use it to prevent diaper rash and to moisturize her skin. I just occasionally sneak and use it for myself.

I knew it must be a good product if it was used by the NICU staff to prevent diaper rash and as a moisturizer. I began using the Aquaphor when I rubbed her down with it after a bath. I would spread a little on the back of my hand and just slather her in it. Sometimes I’d have some leftover so I’d rub it on my elbows or my chapped lips.

This got me wondering what other uses this heavenly product had so of course I started experimenting. Here are just some of the ways I use Aquaphor:

• Scar prevention.

It helps protect small cuts, burns and scrapes from becoming infected and it also boosts the healing if you do get a cut, burn or scrape.

• Soothe chapped lips.

You can smooth the product over your lips to keep them soft and use it to exfoliate chapped lips using a cloth or toothbrush.

• Hydrate dry skin.

Bring dry skin back to life with a swipe of this product on feet, heels, elbows, knees, face. Note: if you have a raw nose after constantly wiping from a cold, Aquaphor will calm the redness.

• Makeup remover.

Similar to cold cream, rub a little Aquaphor on the face and use a tissue or soft cloth to easily remove makeup.

• Extend the life of perfume.

Now I typically don’t wear perfume everyday, but on special occasions I want it to last. I used to do this with Vaseline, but just place a bit on the spot before you apply your perfume and it’ll last a lot longer.

I've used this product in many different ways. https://thehousethatwalkerbuilt.wordpress.com/

• Cuticle ointment.

Place a dab of this into your cuticles just as you would a cuticle cream or oil.

• Lip Gloss.

Create the perfect pink lipgloss with a dab of Aquaphor and blush.

• Brow Tamer.

Tame those wild eyebrow hairs with a swipe of the product.

I have literally taken over my baby’s Aquaphor so much so I now travel with it in my purse and her diaper bag.

How do you use Aquaphor? Let me know via facebook, instagram, or twitter.

Tip Tuesday: Rubbing Alcohol to the Rescue

Have you ever looked at the mirror in your bathroom and wondered what in the world is that? It could be toothpaste or hair gel or something other worldly. If your mirror has more toothpaste on it than your toothbrush and you simply don’t want to break out the bottle of the blue window cleaner, then I’ve got a a chemical free, streak free way to clean it is with just plain rubbing alcohol.

https://thehousethatwalkerbuilt.wordpress.com/

I learned this by accident. My dad used to detail cars and he always used the blue stuff and newspaper. One day I was detailing my car and the ink from the newsprint left a black streak on my windshield. I tried more cleaner but it just spread the ink around. I went into my bathroom pantry and grabbed the first thing I saw — 50% rubbing alcohol. I grabbed it on a whim because I mean why not and it actually worked.
So I figured if it removed the ink then why not just clean with it and so I’ve been using rubbing alcohol ever since.

Take a paper towel or a lint free cloth and wipe away the gunk on your mirror. https://thehousethatwalkerbuilt.wordpress.com/

It doesn’t take much effort to clean the mirror using rubbing alcohol. In fact, I’ve tried to find other uses throughout the house and beyond.

Other uses:
* You can spray rubbing alcohol onto your windshield to quickly remove frost. It works because rubbing alcohol has a low freezing point. Try this overnight treatment: mix 1 quart of water with half cup of rubbing alcohol and spray onto your windshield and you won’t have to scrape the next morning.

* If you’ve accidentally gotten permanent marker on your counter just take a small amount and wipe it off. You can also use this to get permanent marker off your hand.

* Rubbing alcohol can be used to clean your laptop or cell phone. Just use a lint free cloth.

* Speaking of hands you can make your own hand sanitizer using 3 parts alcohol and 1 part aloe vera gel.

* Does your man constantly have ring around the collar? Tell him to wipe his neck with alcohol before getting dressed.
