What’s In My Diaper Bag

Before our little one was born it was nothing for us to pack an overnight bag and take a weekend road trip or jump in the car and head to church on Sundays. Now it takes planning to make sure the little one has necessities while we are away from home.

I must say the hubby and I pack ladybug’s bag like we aren’t ever coming home. I guess we both anticipate anything happening and want to make sure we have thought of everything. Basically we pack so we don’t have to make a pit stop for diapers, wipes or other essentials.

First of all this bag is life. My hubby picked out the bag which I was against in the beginning, but having a diaper bag that doesn’t slip off your shoulders is very convenient. Of course I have a spare “typical” multi-pocket shoulder bag that stays in the car.

We chose our Baby Boom Spaces bag from Walmart, but you can buy a backpack type of diaper bag anywhere or you could just use a back pack. I mean Ju-Ju Be makes one, Bed Bath & Beyond sells a version and Eddie Bauer makes one that is very similar to the one we have. But the reason why we love this bag is because of all the pockets, the insulated bottle holder and the adjustable straps.

Some of the essentials we pack into our ladybug’s bag include at least one sometimes two change of clothing. We never pack less than six diapers. If we plan to be away from home for awhile then we make sure we have somewhere around 10 to 12 diapers. We prefer the Pampers brand.

We always pack burp cloths in case of accidents or to wipe our baby’s runny nose or even in a pinch to lay down on a not-so-clean surface as well as a spare pacifier and we always have the Aquaphor.

Bibs are a must and these custom-made oversized double-sided bibs were made for us by the wife of a co-worker.

Although our diaper bag came with its own diaper changer we still bought a portable diaper changer. The one by Sure Fit is what we settled on and we love it. It has pockets for diapers, wipes and other changing essentials and it has a pad that can be sterilized or wiped down.

We love this Sure Fit portable changing kit. It has pockets and a cleanable surface to place your baby. https://thehousethatwalkerbuilt.wordpress.com/

Tip Tuesday: Kool-Aid Klean

I know what you are thinking. Kool-Aid. Yes. I’m serious. I absolutely can’t stand a dirty bathroom, especially the toilet. I guess I clean the toilet a couple of times a week. I mean what can I say but I have a husband (no further explanation necessary) and we may have the occasional visitors who come over.

I’ve used Comet or as my mother calls it “Texize” and baking soda as well as bleach and Lysol toilet bowl cleaner. But I’d never tried Kool-Aid until recently. I’d heard that you could use the popular kid’s drink, but had never tried it.

So I did my research because I wanted to know what ingredients in the Kool-Aid made it clean the throne. Based on what I found it’s the citric acid that breaks down tough stains. So all you need is lemonade or orange flavored Kool-Aid.

Here’s what I did:

First I flushed the toilet to wet the sides of the bowl and sprinkled the powder into the bowl. I waited two hours and then returned. All it took was a scrub brush and voila.

Extra Tip : You can use the same packet of Lemonade flavored Kool-Aid to clean the dishwasher. Simply pour the packet into the detergent well and run a dish cycle in the empty dishwasher. It removes hard water build up and any soap scum that may have accumulated.

*Disclaimer: I didn’t quite get enough powder onto the sides of the bowl so the “rings” and grime are still present, but the basin of the toilet or trough (I don’t know what you call it) did come clean.

Spring Cleaning: Car Edition

We are always on the go. Simply put we spend a lot of time in our car and sometimes it gets messy. I know we are not the only family whose car looks very lived in. We won’t show you the before pictures but let’s just say the Honda needed a bath.
Since we didn’t have the time to actually wash the car we did “cheat” and went to a car wash. Actually I had a gift card for a free wash at Jimmy Clean’s which was what we used. Thankfully Jimmy Clean’s includes free vacuum service (yay!). But what about cleaning the tires and the dashboard and center console? Sorry Jimmy, but that wasn’t part of my gifted cleaning package.
Hunty, I’m all about the DIY. Let me tell you I scoured the internets, as my girl Lonnie Love would say, and found a very easy DIY “Armor-All” Tire and dashboard cleaner. Now the version I found had the mixture in a larger spray bottle, but she ain’t got time to go buy one when we have a mini bottle on hand.
So my version cost me…..wait for it….wait….74 cents. What the What? I had everything except Dawn dish soap. But if you have to run out and buy these items, go to my favorite store — the Dollar Tree and save yourself some dough. So you know one ingredient. Here’s the other two: baby oil and water. Easy peasy. The dish soap was on sale at Walgreens for 74 cents with a coupon. I already had baby oil and I got my water straight from the tap.
Follow the directions below to learn how I cleaned my dirty tires and car interior.

We used my version of Armor All to give some shine to my tires. We did have to take an old toothbrush to get into the grooves and loosen up some of that dirt. Afterward we took a cloth to wipe the hub cap. We agreed this DIY worked better on the hub caps than the tires. You be the judge.

The Best Mother’s Day Ever: Gift Guide for the “mom” in your life

It’s my first official Mother’s Day. Can I get a whoot, whoot! Even though I was pregnant this time last year it just didn’t feel like I could celebrate because my little ladybug was no bigger than a Twinkie.

Anyway, it’s a day to honor mamas, appreciate grandmothers, show love to a bestie or any woman who has made a significant impact in your life. I’ve learned a lot from the women in my life about being a mother and I’m still learning as my little one continues to grow and I continue to develop into a different kind of woman.

I routinely call my mother for advice about everything from time management now that I’m a working mother-wife to how she managed to raise my sister and I with little money, but lots of love and quality time.

Since I never knew either of my grandmothers, both of whom died before I was born, I can’t tell you how thankful I am that our ladybug has two loving grandmothers and a great-grandmother who love her to pieces.

One of the sweetest things about being a mommy is getting hugs and kisses, but every now and then a little something tangible doesn’t hurt.

So if you need a last minute gift for your mother, grandmother or best girl pal, then look no further. I’ve included something for every “type” and it’s all under $65.
